Is it Me or Them?

What is it about the class or the material that is causing students to zone out, fall asleep or simply not seem to care? Is it me? Is it them? Is it a combination of both? In this in-service, we will address concerns and suggest it is a combination of us, them and the situation or the environment we are in! The good news…..what you will see here, isn’t new! In fact, it requires us, as educators, to practice what we preach!

This session is a 1-1.5-hour presentation. There is interactivity on the part of the participant and therefore an internet connection in necessary.

Technology in Healthcare Education…With No Budget

There are many things that must be prioritized in education. Unfortunately, technological resources are often cut because of cost-effectiveness or simply because they are now outdated. This session will provide the participant with the opportunity to look at some free to low-cost instructional technology applications and how they can be implemented into the classroom to transform the classroom into an active learning environment. These tools can be used in flipped classrooms, interactive lectures, review sessions, or planning a digital tutoring session.

This session can be used in two manners. A hands-on 4-hour session which requires internet and power strips for participant computers or it can be used as a 1-hour breakout not requiring internet access as it provides an overview of some of the free tools and their use is provided.

Interrater Reliability. Do We Get It?

Novice and experienced instructors alike need to evaluate practical skills. But why do scores differ between evaluators? If so does it really make a difference? This session will help the participant identify areas that impact their evaluations. Could this simple session help you transform your evaluation to be within a better reliable range? This interactive topic focuses on summative evaluations but can be transferable to formative evaluations. Participants will evaluate video presented skills to identify their own strength and weaknesses and identify ways to improve on this.

This session can be used as a 1-hour session where one example and norming exercise will be provided, or it can be used as a two-hour session which provides more practice. An internet connection is needed for interactivity.

Competencies. What Are They and Why Do I Care?

The word competency is always used in todays society. Particularly through education and medicine. What does it mean? How is it measured and verified? Is it limited to education or as part of a robust professional development program? This discussion will focus on these questions and propose some ways to establish or build a competency-based program.

This session is a 1-1.5-hour presentation

I Want the Proof!

Educators and providers alike run into a continuous problem about what treatments need to be taught, remembered, or tested on. In today’s day world, the evidence is key. While many believe they live based upon evidence, the reality is, many do not understand what is real what is not and have difficulty finding the research, assessing it, and then apply it. This session will spend some time reviewing some common topics found in EMS/healthcare and then demonstrate how to seek out the necessary information, assess it and determine fact from fiction.

This session is 1 to 3 hours. It can be adjusted by allowing for hands on information gathering and applying the techniques presented.

Technology Tools in Education, Integrating QR Codes

Look at your students, your kids, or yourself. QR codes are being used more frequently than you think! From Snapchat Codes, to those little squares you see on flyers, or on that new laptop or printer you purchased, QR codes are all around us. How can we, as educators, take advantage of this tool and utilize it in the classroom? This session will describe what a QR Code is, how to create one and then what the heck can I do with it? At the end of the session you will be able to create a QR code, integrate them into your class, maximize their use with instructional videos, attendance, evaluations, and increasing student engagement.

This session is 1 hour.

Evaluation Validation

Today’s education requires instructors and administrators to be able to show evidence they have valid and reliable tools when assessing their students. While many may rely on the publisher exams and a book that provides scenarios, these are not always validated to high stakes evaluations. This session will provide some basic information to the participant to begin validating cognitive exams and simulation.

This session is variable in duration.
